First Step: Temporary Roof Repairs to Reduce Damage
After a storm hits, getting the roof back to watertight condition is paramount. Temporary repairs will stop water from coming in and cause even further damage. This can also help get your facility back to operational quickly.
Make sure you or your roofing provider take detailed photos of the damage for insurance claims. Document all damage and defects thoroughly.
Factors to Consider Before Making Roofing Decisions
Once temporary repairs are complete, don't rush into any major decisions regarding your facility's roof. These major factors should be considered carefully.
- Research local building codes, particularly if your facility is in Florida with strict wind uplift requirements.
- Conduct an extremely thorough inspection with an infrared or thermal scan of the entire roof. These scans are critical in identifying wet insulation that can lead to several issues in the long run, including structural damage, compromised indoor air quality, and more.
- If asbestos is a concern, use a certified hazardous materials inspection provider and removal team.
- Consider the individual needs of the building and type of business you are conducting including climate, building type, and devastation of the storm. In addition, consider the longevity goals of the facility – will you be at this location in 20 years? If not, don't rule out a shorter-term solution at a better price point.
